Voice typing on a Mac
You searched "voice typing" because that is what Google calls it, in Docs, on Gboard, on a Chromebook. Apple calls the same feature Dictation. Your Mac already has it, it is free, and turning it on takes about two minutes. Here is where it lives, how to start it, and where it runs out.

Find your shortcut
On recent Mac keyboards the microphone key F5 starts Dictation. Older setups used pressing fn twice. The same settings pane lets you change it; pick something you will not hit by accident.

Click a field and talk
Put the cursor anywhere text goes, press the shortcut, and speak. A mic icon appears and words show up as you say them. Apple can insert punctuation automatically in supported languages, though you can still say "comma", "period", or "new paragraph". Press the shortcut again to stop.

From Google Docs
Docs voice typing still works on a Mac, but only inside a Docs document and only in a browser Google supports. It is under the Tools menu, or Cmd+Shift+S. Details in our guide to dictating in Google Docs.

Gboard's mic key follows you across every app on your phone. The Mac equivalent is Dictation: one shortcut that types into whatever field has the cursor, in any app.
From a Chromebook
Chromebooks file voice typing under accessibility. On a Mac the text input half is Dictation. Full hands free navigation is a separate macOS feature called Voice Control. Standard Dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is on.

Where built-in voice typing runs out
Free and built in covers a lot. These are the walls people hit once they try to use it all day.
It stops when you pause
Stop to think and Dictation can shut itself off mid sentence. You restart it, lose the thread, restart it again. This is how most people quietly drift back to typing.
Automatic punctuation is uneven
Apple can add commas, periods, and question marks automatically in supported languages, but the results vary. Spoken punctuation commands remain the reliable fallback.
Jargon comes out wrong
Product names, technical terms, and anything not in a dictionary get mangled, and there is no glossary to teach the built-in version your vocabulary.
The per app mics stay per app
Google's voice typing never leaves the Docs document. ChatGPT's mic never leaves ChatGPT. Every tool that ships its own button stops at its own door.
