Mac dictation not working? Start here.
Dictation on a Mac fails in a handful of known ways: the shortcut does nothing, the mic icon appears and hears nothing, or the option is greyed out entirely. This page works through every cause we know of, in the order worth checking. Fix 00 · try this before anything else
The fix that usually works
Turn Dictation off, restart the Mac, turn it back on. Open System Settings, click Keyboard, scroll to the Dictation section, and flip the switch off. Restart. Flip it back on and press the shortcut again.
This clears the stuck state that follows macOS updates and long uptimes. It takes two minutes and costs nothing to try, which is why it goes first. Still nothing? Work down the list.

Fix 01
Check the Dictation switch is actually on
Open System Settings, choose Keyboard in the sidebar, and scroll to the Dictation section. The switch there has to be on. When it's off, pressing the shortcut produces no error and no prompt, which reads exactly like a broken feature.
Turning it on for the first time may trigger a download of speech files. Let it finish before judging the results.

On a work or school machine, a management profile can disable Dictation outright. If the switch is missing or locked, the fix is a conversation with your IT admin, not a setting.

Fix 02
Point it at the right microphone
The Dictation section has a microphone source setting. “Automatic” picks for you, and it usually picks well until you connect a display, an audio interface, or a headset with a worse mic, and dictation quietly starts listening to that instead. Set the source to the microphone you actually speak into.
Then verify the Mac can hear you at all: open System Settings › Sound, say something, and watch the input meter. If it doesn't move there, no dictation software is going to hear you either. Fix the mic first.

Fix 03
Set the shortcut, or free it from a conflict
Dictation starts from a keyboard shortcut. On recent Macs the default is pressing the Fn (globe) key twice. The Shortcut menu in the Dictation section shows what yours is set to, and “Off” is one of the choices, which is how people end up with Dictation enabled and no way to trigger it. Pick a preset and test it.
If the shortcut is set but nothing happens, another tool may be swallowing the keypress before macOS sees it. Keyboard remappers and launcher apps are the usual suspects. Quit them one at a time and retest. We wrote a separate guide to the Mac dictation shortcut with the full detail.

“Off” is a valid Shortcut setting. Dictation can be fully enabled with no key assigned to start it.
Fix 04
Check your language is downloaded
Dictation needs speech files for the language you dictate in. In the Dictation section, click Edit next to Languages to see what's installed and add what's missing. Downloading needs an internet connection.
On recent macOS versions, supported languages run on-device once the files are in place. Languages without on-device support send audio to Apple's servers instead, so those stop working when your connection does. A Mac that dictates fine at home and refuses on a train is usually this.

Fix 05
Decide whether it's the app, not the Mac
When dictation works in some apps and not others, stop debugging macOS. Test in Notes or TextEdit: if it works there, the feature is fine and the app is the problem.
Two known cases. Password and other secure fields block dictation on purpose, and that's correct behavior. And some apps, including a few built on Electron, use text fields that built-in dictation doesn't handle cleanly. The workaround is dictating into a plain app and pasting, which is as tedious as it sounds.

Fix 06
Turn off Voice Control, if you only want dictation
Voice Control is Apple's drive-the-whole-Mac-by-voice accessibility feature, and it doesn't share: Apple's documentation says keyboard dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is on.
Check System Settings › Accessibility › Voice Control. If it's on and you didn't mean it to be, turn it off and press the dictation shortcut again. If you use both deliberately, you have to alternate.

Fix 07
Just updated macOS? Restart again and re-check
macOS updates break dictation often enough to earn their own step. First, restart again: the boot straight after an update doesn't always leave everything loaded.
Second, updates occasionally reset dictation settings. The shortcut can revert to default, the microphone source can fall back to Automatic, and speech files sometimes re-download. If dictation died the day you updated, re-walk fixes 1 through 4 before concluding anything is actually broken.

When to stop fixing it
Seven fixes is a lot of goodwill toward one checkbox. If built-in dictation still drops sessions or ignores whole apps after all this, the calm option is a tool with exactly one job: hold a key, speak, release, and the text lands where your cursor was.

FAQ
Common causes and limits.
Why is Dictation greyed out or missing in System Settings?
A management profile may have disabled it. Ask your administrator. On a personal Mac, restart and install pending macOS updates.
Does Mac dictation need an internet connection?
Language downloads require a connection. Supported languages then run on-device. Other languages use Apple’s servers and need internet access.
Why does dictation stop by itself mid-sentence?
Apple Dictation ends after about 30 seconds of silence, and switching windows can also stop it. There is no setting to change this. Hold-to-talk apps avoid that limit.
Why won’t dictation work in password fields?
macOS blocks speech-to-text in password and other secure fields. This is expected behavior.
Can I use Voice Control and Dictation at the same time?
No. Keyboard Dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is on. Use Voice Control to operate the Mac by voice, or turn it off to use keyboard Dictation.
Do these fixes apply to my macOS version?
On older macOS versions, these options are under System Preferences > Keyboard > Dictation. The same checks still apply.
