How to dictate into Claude on a Mac

Claude voice mode is a conversation. Dictation creates editable text in the composer. Here is how to do that in claude.ai, the desktop app, and Claude Code.

What Claude gives you out of the box

Voice mode

A conversation, not a typewriter

Voice mode is in beta on mobile, desktop, and web. You speak and Claude answers aloud. It does not create editable composer text.

On your phone

A real dictation button

The iOS and Android apps have a dictation button. We could not find a Mac equivalent as of July 2026.

On your Mac

Apple's dictation, with its habits

Apple Dictation works in Claude and is free, but can time out and automatic punctuation can be uneven. Our guide to dictating on a Mac covers setup and limits.

Dictate into Claude in four steps

Install Dictate once

Download Dictate, sign in, and pick a key to hold. There are no models, API keys, or per-app settings.

Transcription runs on our servers and needs a connection.

your key

Any key. Held, not tapped.

The target

A cursor in the composer is the entire integration.

Click where the prompt goes

Open claude.ai, the desktop app, or Claude Code. Click the composer or terminal so it has focus. Dictate types there like a keyboard.

Hold the key and say the whole prompt

Say the goal, constraints, what you tried, and what a good answer looks like. Recording continues until you release the key.

While you hold

Speak until you are done. Nothing cuts you off.

Release. The prompt lands at the cursor.

Release the key to insert punctuated text at the cursor. Review it, then press Enter.

"Refactor the auth middleware to return a 401 instead of redirecting, keep the session cookie logic where it is, and tell me which tests will break."

The point of all this

Why speak a prompt instead of typing it

Useful prompts include what you are building, what you tried, the error, and what success looks like. Speaking makes that context easier to include.

The same context can take about thirty seconds to say.

Review the transcript in the composer and fix any important word before sending.

Typed context

Trimmed until it fits your patience

Spoken context

All of it, in about thirty seconds

Claude dictation questions

The ones people search before setting this up.

Does Claude have a built-in dictation button on Mac?

We could not find one as of July 2026. The mobile apps have dictation, and voice mode is in beta on mobile, desktop, and web. On Mac, use Apple Dictation or a system-wide app.

What is the difference between voice mode and dictating into Claude?

Voice mode is a spoken conversation. Dictation creates editable text in the composer for you to review before sending.

Can I dictate into Claude Code in the terminal?

Yes. Dictate inserts at the cursor in Terminal, iTerm2, and Warp. See our terminal guide for the full workflow.

Does it work with claude.ai in any browser?

Yes. Dictate types into the focused field, so claude.ai works in any browser and in the desktop app. No extension is needed.

What happens to my audio?

Audio travels over TLS to our servers, is transcribed, then discarded. History stores text, never recordings. Transcription needs a connection.

How much does Dictate cost?

$8 a month, with one plan and no tiers. Unused subscriptions are refunded in full; after any transcription, the month is non-refundable.

The same held key works in every prompt box you own. See how to dictate into ChatGPT, or check the one-plan pricing page first.

Say the whole prompt.

$8/month flat. Cancel any time; unused subscriptions refunded in full.
