Dictate in · ChatGPT

Speak your prompts.

ChatGPT has its own mic. Dictate gives you the same hold-to-talk habit across your Mac. Use it in the web or desktop composer, speak, and release to insert editable text.

Plan a 10 day Tokyo trip for two, mid October. Mid budget, no car, one day trip out of the city. Food markets over museums. Give me a day by day outline first, then we refine it.

First, the built-in options

ChatGPT already has voice. Two kinds.

As of mid-2026, ChatGPT offers both on the web and in its apps.

Voice Mode

A spoken conversation

You speak and ChatGPT answers aloud. Use dictation instead when you want editable text before sending.

Dictation

The mic in the prompt box

Tap the mic and speak. Editable text appears in the composer. The control may move between releases.

The limit

Both stop at ChatGPT’s door

ChatGPT’s controls only work inside ChatGPT. Dictate’s hotkey works in every text field on the Mac.

The loop

How to dictate into ChatGPT

Dictate is our app.

01

Click into the composer

Use chatgpt.com in any browser or the desktop app. Dictate types wherever the cursor is.

02

Hold the hotkey and talk

Include the goal, context, and constraints. Recording continues until you release the key.

03

Release, read, send

The punctuated transcript lands at your cursor. Review it, then send.

Long prompts

Why long prompts favor voice

Useful prompts often need background, constraints, tone, and an example. Speaking makes it easier to include that context.

A spoken draft can be rough. Review it in the composer, trim it if needed, then send the complete prompt.

What gets typed

help me write a landing page

Little context means a generic answer.

What gets said

Write a landing page for a bookkeeping tool aimed at restaurant owners. They are skeptical of software, so lead with the weekly close, keep it under 300 words, and match the tone of the example I am about to paste.

More context takes seconds to say and produces a more useful draft.

Past ChatGPT

ChatGPT today, Claude tomorrow

The same hotkey works when you dictate into Claude and when you talk to Cursor’s chat panel. New to voice input on a Mac? Start with our guide to dictating on a Mac, including the free built-in option.

FAQ

What people search before they try this.

Does ChatGPT have built-in voice input?

Yes. Voice Mode is a spoken conversation. The mic in the prompt box turns speech into editable text. Both were available on the web, mobile, and desktop as of mid-2026.

Can I dictate into ChatGPT on the web?

Yes. Click the mic in the composer and allow microphone access. Or use Dictate’s system-wide hotkey, which also works in every other text field on your Mac.

Does Dictate work in the ChatGPT desktop app?

Yes. Put the cursor in the composer, hold Dictate’s hotkey, speak, and release.

Why use Dictate instead of ChatGPT’s own mic?

If you only dictate in ChatGPT, its mic may be enough. Dictate gives you one hotkey for ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, email, and every other text field.

Is my audio stored?

No. Audio travels over TLS to our servers, is transcribed, then discarded. History stores the text, never the recording.

Do I need to configure anything?

Sign in, grant Microphone and Accessibility access, and pick a hotkey. There are no models, API keys, or per-app settings. Dictate costs $8 a month.
